Sarcastic Slaughtersm Awkward Tales, and Embarrassing Moments - A Look into British Panel Shows

Into The World Of Panel Shows

Hello again. It's Pat again delivering the usual. This time, we are going to dive into a more popular genre of British television lately - panel shows. What exactly is a panel show? Panel shows often have celebrities go against each other in some format of discussion. It can be anything from putting a satirical spin on the weekly news, taking the mickey of renowned leaders, or even having a go at each other, all done in the name of entertainment. Panel shows have been receiving great reception over the past decade or so due it its live audience factor. It gives them a sense of spontaneous vibe and makes the discussion taking place feel more natural.

For this post in particular, we are going to be taking a look at the comedy panel show - Would I Lie To You?

What's It About?

Once again, our free and "reliable" encyclopedia, Wikipedia will enlighten us about the wonders and fascination of this delightful show.

The show was presented by Angus Deayton in 2007 and 2008 and by Rob Brydon (who had appeared as a guest panellist in the second series) from 2009 onwards.[1] The team captains are comedians David Mitchell and Lee Mack. As revealed by Lee Mack on Alan Carr: Chatty Man on 19 September 2014, Alan Carrwas a team captain in the pilot but subsequently turned down an offer to appear on later shows. For each show, two celebrity guests join each of the team captains. The teams compete as each player reveals unusual facts and embarrassing personal tales for the evaluation of the opposing team. Some of these are true; some are not, and panellists’ task is to decide which is which.

What Makes It So Unique?

It's ultimately the cast of the show that makes it so unique. On one end, we have the notorious middle class British comedian persona, David Mitchell, infamous for his rants and general upper intellect. On the other end, we have the quick witted Lee Mack who conjures the most insane (yet absolutely hilarious) examples of fabricated lies to deceive the opposing team.

Here's a video of David Mitchell in action and a quick taste of the type of hilarity you will expect from this show:

David trying to convince the other team that about his philosophy of noteworthy appearances

And on the other end, here's a preview of Lee Mack's famous quick wit:

Lee Mack trying to convince the opposing team that all the first letters of all his ex-girlfriends spell out BERMUDA

And we have hilarious guests such as Reginald D Hunter appearing on the show:

Here is a video of him trying to convince the opposing team that the D in his middle stands for Delicious

All in All

With currently 9 seasons to date, Would I Lie To You will provide you family-friendly (heh) entertainment that will last hours. I highly recommend giving it go, even if it's just watching random clips on Youtube or any other video streaming site. As for my personal rating, it definitely deserves at least a 4/5. David Mitchell is one of my favourite British comedians of all time.

House of Cards - suspense and fascination that takes your breath away

Hi, this is Axel again to deliver another TV-series post, this time featuring

Everybody likes a bit of suspense and entertainment. Think of playing a card game with your mates. No stop, wait... think of gambling instead. With friends as well as strangers. Not everyone likes it, some like it too much and there is both risk and amusement and even the thought about legal consequences in the back of your head.
This is essentially how things are in Netflix's U.S. drama series House of Cards.

About House of Cards

House of Cards is a drama series which takes place in politics. Originally from the UK, netlifx made an adaptation of it in the U.S. The main characters are congressman Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) and his wife Clair Underwood (Robin Wright). In this series' universe, ambitious and untrustworthy politicians strive for power and influence in the bureaucratic complexity of the United States' political system.

Here is a brief explanation: think of politics like  several teams competing ín a game: Republicans, Democrats, journalists, activists and lobbyists. They compete about personal gain, powerful positions, compromising information and for ideological purposes. In turn, each team's team members compete among themselves about the safe positions (so you don't lose your career), powerful positions (so you get your will done) and control over other people.

The plot

If your in this mess you can almost not trust anyone. Frank Underwood learned this the hard way as the Garret Walker (Michael Gill) had promised him the position of U.S. Secretary of State (which is the foreign affairs minister) if Congressman Frank helped him win the election.

Frank used lies, blackmails, promises, lobbyists, debates, loans, interviews, media tips and basically sold his soul to the devil of gambling and deception.

Election won. His colleague becomes president Walker of the United States. But the Presidents' promise turned out to be as valuable as a formal 'Atta Boy!', quite despicable, even for being from one politician to another. The role of Secretary of State was given to another and Frank Underwood is back in Congress where he started... And just has to start working his way up.
And this is just the first episode.

In the dozens of episodes which fills season after season, Congressman Frank risks everything for himself and his wife. Husband Frank Underwood risks loosing his job if he doesn't make sure his team (democrats) gain ground in hte political field. His wife Clair Underwood works a thriving business but is chased by greedy lobbyists and an abusive ex-lover. Meanwhile, the media is after them with nasty rumors, and if they step down or give in to the pressure of journalists, lobbyists and all the others, their careers are done for forever.

On the other hand... Frank risks too much it seems. He has no children. The only one he can trust is his wife. But during the plot of season one he goes so far to cheat on his wife by having an affair with a young journalist, in exchange for sharing information that could be used against political rivals.

Reception

Well, House of Cards is so thrilling and full of fascination... it is tense until the point where breath is taken away and minds blown. You'll be exhausted after watching it, but you will love it.

No wonder House of Cards has won Golden Globes and Emmys and more, and continously score high on reviews, 9/10 on IMDB and 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.
It is one of the best series I have ever seen and I will enjoy the rest it has to offer.

Going Back To Classics - Fawlty Towers

A Blast From The Past - Fawlty Towers

Hi. Pat here again and today, we are closing off the week with a British TV classic, featuring Fawlty Towers!

This show is definitely a lot older than the previous two shows I have mentioned, premiering in 1975 and finishing in 1979.

What's it About?

Once again, we are going to borrow from our good friend Wikipedia to provide us with a lovely synopsis of this British classic.

Fawlty Towers is a BBC television sitcom that was first broadcast on BBC2 in 1975 and 1979. Twelve episodes were made (two series, each of six episodes). The show was written by John Cleese and Connie Booth, then married, both of whom also starred in the show.
In a list drawn up by the British Film Institute in 2000, voted by industry professionals, Fawlty Towers was named the best British television series of all time.

What Makes It So Unique?

British shows tend to have this unique and bizarre chemistry that play between each character and it certainly holds true for one of the Britain's most oldest TV shows. We have a sarcastic, short tempered, and generally annoyed hotel owner, Mr Fawlty who has to put with with the most eccentric of guests and their demands. Coupled with his bossy wife, a Spanish waiter, and one seemingly normal maid, there is never a dull moment within the ceilings of Fawlty Towers.
My personal favourite moments are of Mr Fawlty's poor and abusive treatment of the Spanish waiter, Manuel and the interesting situations that Manuel's misunderstanding of Mr Fawlty's intentions lead to.

This can be anything from getting the wrong item, delivering the wrong food to the wrong guest, or cooking something that's inedible. Such a simple dynamic of not understanding English can lead to the most hilarious of situations. Even today, no matter how many times I replay these episodes, they never fail to make me laugh.

Another particular element that makes Fawlty Towers so enjoyable is none other than Basil Fawlty himself. I love the moments when he loses all sense of rational thought and cognition, and the peculiar situations he ends up finding himself in.

Granted, his people skills are not of the best but that's what makes Fawlty Towers such an appealing and amusing show.

All in All

Rocking twelve episodes, Fawlty Towers will provide a short but memorable watch. There is a disclaimer I have to add though. People who dislike mistreatment of others or rude people in general will not find this show as amusing as intended. The sheer craziness of the characters running a seemingly normal hotel is the bread and butter of the show. Sometimes, the silliness of it all can be too overpowered and unbearable and for that, I give this show a 3.5/5.

Till next time. Peace!

Thanks to Wiki, and gifsoup for the images and synopsis.

I Remember You

Hey guys, it's CW here. Been getting a lot of positive responses from my previous posts, so here I am with another drama review.  Seriously, although watching and reviewing k-drama is my side job, dramas that I can 100% wholeheartedly recommend friends to watch have less than 20.   "I remember you" is most definitely on my top 20 list. The main dude, Soo In Guk is not only my bias, been following him since "Reply 1997".  Soo In Guk has always been in mellow drama and now for the first time challenging a romantic thriller *melts*,  even more charismatic!

So the story revolves around MaleLead, his stalker, the guy who killed his dad and his missing younger brother.

Here we go~

The story begin when MaleLead received a mysterious email regarding a murder case in South Korea, he then returned to Korea for this matter as it links to what he has been searching for.

On day 1 of his return, at the crime scene, a random detective chased him down the street.  MaleLead was surprised that she knew his name.  FemaleLead aka stalker was disappointed that he had no idea who she was.

Because... she has been stalking him for the past twenty years... how could he have not known?

When MaleLead was about 10, him, his dad and younger brother moved to a new suburb. MaleLead found a dead dog at the backyard and buried it.  MaleLead's dad thought it was MaleLead who killed the dog.  Because ever since they moved in, their neighbors  noticed an increase of dead animals around the area...

MaleLead's father is a psychologist, as well as a counselor for inmates.

MaleLead's father found uncanny similarities between his son and the inmate he's currently counselling.
Coincidentally MaleLead and the psycho serial murderer met.... They had a long chat.

MaleLead reads his fathers memo everyday behind his father's back. He found out that his father thought he's a monster.

Soon afterwards, MaleLead's father locked him up in the basement and isolated him from the world.

The psycho killer escaped prison and came out to kill the counselor.

For some unknown reason, MaleLead's younger brother knew exactly who the psycho was and quickly escaped from the house.

MaleLead came out from the basement and found his father on the floor.

Okay, seems confusing but I can't say too much otherwise I will spoil it.  Let me know if you liked it and leave a comment below!
